The E-SECRET is a collaborative between the MENA-SINO, MENA Neuro-Audit Chapter (MENA-NAC) and Redcap, through the use of a Patient Safety Organization. The registry plays a key role in helping to identify best practices and demonstrating a hospital’s dedication to improving patient care. Additionally, the E-SECRET Registry:
- Is an effective and convenient way for physicians and hospitals to track procedures, peri-procedural in-hospital data, and clinical outcomes in patients.
- Assists members in meeting the demands of regulatory agencies
- Provides a mechanism for members to evaluate performance
- Helps improve patient care by tracking procedures, complications, and outcomes for patients treated by surgery, endovascular therapy, or medical management
- Allows assessment of device efficacy
Redcap provides the Redcap PATHWAYS web-based clinical platform, which includes analytics and reporting, as well as sales and marketing and technical support for the registry.
The MENA-SINO Patient Safety Organization (PSO) directs the data sharing partnerships and patient safety initiatives of the E-SECRET, led by a governing council of representatives from the MENA-SINO and MENA-NAC. The mission of the MENA-SINO PSO is to improve patient safety and the quality of health care delivery by providing web-based collection, aggregation, and analysis of clinical data submitted in registry format for all patients undergoing neurointerventional surgery treatment.
Federal, regional and private medical insurance programs are placing quality patient outcomes at the forefront of hospital and individual physician assessment for stratification of reimbursement. As a result, many databases and metrics have been developed to assess and measure these outcomes.
The importance of the MENA-SINO Patient Safety Organization (PSO)
The concept of a PSO has its origins in the national Patient Safety and Quality Act and the corresponding regulations issued by Global Patient Safety Collaborative (GPSC).
A PSO is an organization developed to help physicians and other health care providers to share and analyze clinical outcomes and data associated with patient safety in a HIPAA-compliant manner, protected from legal discovery, as part of a quality improvement initiative.
This infrastructure, along with certain other procedural safeguards such as business associate agreements between the MENA-SINO PSO and Redcap, allows the collection of clinical data associated for quality improvement purposes without requiring individual patient consent or prior approval from an Institutional Review Board (IRB).
In addition, the MENA-SINO PSO benchmarking gives institutions the ability to create registry-based quality initiatives and national and module comparisons. Benchmarking facilitates comparisons of device effectiveness and delivers a comprehensive quality improvement mechanism for E-SECRET participants.
